A BODY OF DIVINITY |
COMPILED FROM THE SERMONS OF |
by ERIC W. HAYDEN
Previously un-published, this Special Feature is intended for Readers of the complete, unedited, unabridged set of C.H. Spurgeon's Original 63-Volume Sermon Series Re-published today from the Original Passmore & Alabaster Complete Set by Pilgrim Publications (from 1969 until completion in 1980).
On Sunday morning, 26 October 1884, in the Metropolitan Tabernacle, London, |
Charles Haddon Spurgeon preached a sermon which he entitled... |
A SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE and A BODY OF DIVINITY Free upon REQUEST << [a single copy of this Sermon in Booklet form] His text was 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 "For they themselves show of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, |
and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; |
and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, |
even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come." |
In the second half of the sermon Spurgeon saw "a body of divinity," following on from a "miniature biography of a Christian man" in the first half. His "body of divinity" was a multum in parvo (much in little), gospel truths "in a nutshell." First he dealt with the Deity of Christ, followed by his humanity. His third doctrine was "the unity of the Divine Person of our Lord," followed by a doctrine about ourselves, "that men by nature are guilty" and so needed a Saviour. He proceeded to show how "the Lord Jesus Christ died for these fallen men" and how the Father accepted the death of His Son.
Our Lord's resurrection & ascension were then dealt with, the latter being expanded into Christ's heavenly ministry now: preparing heaven for us and praying for us. He ended his body-of-divinity sermon by speaking of Christ's second coming, his ability to deliver us from the wrath to come, and ending on the comforting note of assurance.
The phrase "Body of Divinity" is not known or used much in this twentieth century, except by Christians who hold to the Reformed faith (or the Five points of Calvinism). The re-printing and publication of Thomas Watson's Body of Divinity by the Banner of Truth Trust in October 1958, at the instigation of the late Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, brought it to the attention of modern-day Puritan lovers. The initial 2,000 copies were soon exhausted and within the next twelve years nearly 17,000 copies had been printed.
Spurgeon himself looked upon Watson as a man of "profound theology and varied learning" and yet "one of the many Puritan preachers who won the popular ear with "pearls of anecdote." He also published an edition of Watson's Body of Divinity, prefaced by a "Brief Memoir" and an Appendix on Believer's Baptism, (as Spurgeon opposed Watson's Paedobaptist views).
Such a scheme of ordered theology, from the Nature and Attributes of God to the Personal Morality and Social Concern of the Christian, obviously influenced Spurgeon in his preparation of sermons. He often urged the students of his Pastor's College to preach a "full-orbed" gospel of "the whole counsel of God," and that is what he himself did. Scriptural truths in their widest aspects were covered by this Prince of Preachers, and it is the aim of this present work to illustrate how well Spurgeon covered every aspect of Divine truth.
B. H. CARROLL
Founder of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth Texas, USA
"Charles Haddon Spurgeon, by common consent, is acknowledged to be the greatest preacher since apostolic times. I have seen 2,500 of his published sermons. They are as plumb as a partridge, and as full of meat as an egg." By topical arrangement, Carroll said, Spurgeon's sermons would constitute "a complete body of systematic theology."

in the holy scripture of 1st Corinthians 1:23-24 "But we preach CHRIST CRUCIFIED, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; but unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God." Based on the Biblical declaration of John 3:14, "And As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up," the striking emblem was his motto and appeared on the cloth-binding spines of the original New Park Street & Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit Sermon Series. |
